Of course it's a badly flawed set of questions with several concepts in each so there is no way of giving a "true" answer.
And the terms are too limited.
"A"theist means anti (against) god, or anti (againsr) belief in god. As a Canadian comic said "How can you be against something you don't think exists!" As for the belief part, I don't care what anyone believes in. as long as they do not think they have a right to force those beliefs on anyone else. |

After seven years of mixed weather every one was remarking on the wonderful combination of sun, breeze, and temperature. Other than the hot dog stand running out of hot dogs it was perfect, and they were able to get more hot dogs.

The old shed that will be the Garden Tool Shed, thanks to a Boy Scout project, has been moved to its new cement foundation and it awaits rehabilitation.
With the shed moved the "Lets paint a farm scene" activity center had a place to display their results.

There was also a place for the public to work a mural panel like the ones planed for the celebration of the founding of Saline taking place later this summer.
The Fiddlers ReStrung entertained with their type of folk music. It is a style that had the percussionist going from washboard to bongos to train whistles.

It's foot tapping music and for several numbers, members of the band and even the sound tech got out front and "clog" danced on a sheet of plywood.

The son of one of the "House ladies" as a Junior High community service project is helping in the garden. He was planting while the visitors walked by. It looked like 1930 to me.
But he was having a problem I remember from my youth. When you are putting plants in it's hard to keep a straight row. The eight foot rod was not helping.

So, Cathy got out this pretty string and stretched it across the garden.

It didn't help much, but the plants are in.

And the string is rewound.
( Notice the tall black object. It's two Bose amps that were state of the art and comfortable to listen to even within four feet.)
After the fiddlers left we were treated to The Generations Duo. I do not remember her name but he was introduced as the drummer with the Johnny Knorr Band. When I looked it up, on line, the band is called a big band that goes back to the end of that era and the drummer is listed as "the legendary Bob Johnson".

She played well, called the tunes and had a very nice voice.

He was great on the drums and played the vibraphone beautifully.

A member of the audience who had to dance.

It was a beautiful day for opening the farms eighth season. |

| | Button Up Your Overcoat | ] | LAURA HAVILAND
She is the most unforgettable person I've never met. The first thing I noticed was sort of art related. There in the middle of Adrian Michigan was this totally unglamorous statue of a real woman I'd never heard of. She was seated stiffly in a stone chair wearing what seems to be her winter coat and hat, holding a Bible. It was winter when I first saw her, but as the seasons changed I realized there are other fully clothed statues but none I could remember in cold weather gear and none that were female.
Eventually a librarian was able to answer my questions about her. She was a local "activist" before that became the term for it. She has several web sites with the remarkable details of her biography.
But my favorite story is one the librarian told me about one of her techniques for picking up fugitive slaves from an underground railway station in Ohio. She would drive her buggy by herself to the south and then, when she picked up the fugitive, she would hide him in plain sight, putting him on the drivers seat. She would sit in the back passenger seat, shouting orders to him as though he was her driver.

A few years ago the Detroit ABC TV station called attention to the fact that there are far fewer statues of real women than real men. Most female statues are either about some fictional character or they represent an abstraction like justice or liberty. I'm not sure how to count the statue of Mary Richards, because we all know that's really Mary Tyler Moore. |

(To the tune of The Great Pretender. And picture Scott M, doing all the Motown backup moves while the press corps as the chorus does the OOO, ooo, OOO, ooo's)
Oh yes, he's the great decider, Deciding what every one must do. His will is such, he decides too much, He's lonely but deciding's what he must do.
Oh yes he's the great decider, Aloof from the job that he's won He plays the game but ignores the blame, And that smirk says that he's having fun
Too real the feeling he's made no mistakes Too real he feels he needs some breaks.
Oh Yes he's the great decider, Just scowling and pouting like a mime He'll appear to know, but it's all for show, And its only a matter of time, Deciding the decider has to go.
As he dances off, George is saying "Dick said I should say that, about me being the decider. |

| | Behind Closed Doors | ] | One painting has always fascinated me. The artist was a twin. Both were well known and that was part of the reason why, in 1945, when MGM decided to make Oscar Wilde"s novel, Picture of Dorian Gray. they asked Melvin Albright to paint the "before" portrait of the actor,Hurd Hatfield and Ivan to do the "after" concept. They didn't use the "before" by his brother, but they did use Ivan's showing several stages and this final portrait,
When another of Ivan"s paintings That Which I Should Have Done I Did Not Do some times known as Door, was used as a cover on a popular magazine it caught my attention as well as my eye. The pictures of how he had to alter his studio to fit the dimentions of the painting were odd. To keep the work area at eye level he cut a hole in his floor and in the roof to allow him to move the more than life size canvas up and down on his easel.
It became my favorite painting when Barb and I were looking at it "live" in the art museum in Chicago and I found myself glancing at the floor beneath the painting to see if there were any paint chips or debris from the wreath.
His other works were often shown and they usually tried to make a point like the one about being made in God's image.
But as a person who dislikes picking favorites in any area, Door is the major exception, not only for the way it looks, but for the heavy handed irony of the title. |

| | Little Boxes | ] |
Last week at a candle party Sara, Nancy and their friends used the gathering as a chance to craft over one hundred place card/favor boxes. When they were assembled and placed in a container Nancy photografted them and later shared that and other photos.
It was a strangely dynamic visual with a sense of the energy that went into making each box and even the way they were brought together in the container. Futurism came to mind and Du Champ's "Nude Descending A Staircase" in particular seemed to be . made of similar visual bits.
That made me wonder what might result if Nancy's picture of Sara's boxes were used as the source for the "edit" functions available at the Kodak EasyShare site. I have enjoyed using the "cartoon" function to make pseudo sketches of family members, like this "drawing" of my brother Maxson and Sam his dog.

The same function made the bunch of boxes look even more like Duchamp's painting ( once described by a conservative critic as a cyclone in a shingle factory.).

There is a "coloring book" option that give the picture a line sketch effect that made the boxes look more like an architectural drawing.

Another choice is called "fish eye" because it resembles the rounded lens that brings more of the edges into the picture. In the Kodak site they make this effect by magnifying the middle of the picture more than the edges and you end up with the boxes looking like something caught in a bottle.

Two other controls have to do with the color or the lack of color. The first takes out the hues but leaves the shades of gray and the picture looks like a black and white photo. It begins to look like a solid structure.

Instead of black and white you can click on "sepia" and be reminded of the photos from a century ago.
Another choice is to repeat one function several times. This often turns out badly but a few are at least interesting. Repeated "cartoon" clicks will pile on so many lines that the picture looks like a darkly grouted mosaic.

As you work with the photo you begin to see parts that are interesting and with a function called "cropping" you can create details that are clever designs on their own.

And once in a while there is a miracle.

As you can see , there is Mary and Joseph the crib with just a hint of the babes head and one of the wise men. kneeling. holding a gift, or is it a guitar. or an angel with a harp.
OK What then?
Its clear with a photo that is already as close as reality can come to an abstract design you can have almost endless visual fun with it.

| | Dance With Me, (I want my arms about you) | ] |
Dancers at the Coconut Radio show
The other night my daughter amused us with her comments on line dance at a country/western venue. Oh, sure, its an easy target for a giggle or two, but it brought my attention to Dance as a topic for this modern day version of SHOW AND TELL, DEAR DIARY, and the BACK FENCE.
My older daughter and I have been fascinated along with this nations fascination over the television show Dance With The Stars. What a clever concept it was. No manifacture unreal "reality" with non entities on some unlikely or primitive place. These were public people with some degree of celebrity, matched with almost unknown but life time highly professional dancers, in a familiar public location. Even the recent factor of viewer voting, with the popularity of the person working against a purely skill oriented choice added an unpredictable feature that increased the suspense each week.
The presentation was perfect for the contest concept and it made me think of the numbers from the musicals of the thirties and forties or the variety shows and occasional dance specials on television in the fifties and sixties.
And to top off this focus on movement to music theme St Patrick's Day gave all the Celtic Dance troops their once a year chance to appear on most of the talk shows and all of the news casts. At this point the visual images start over lapping. Cute little Irish girls, arms held to their sides while their feet fling themselfs in every direction, Men and women in cowboy hats and boots, clapping hands, bobbing and weaving while doing synchronized stomping. A line of mature men resting their arms on the shoulders next to them as they all wind their way through the room to mandolin like music.
That began a flood of memories dancing through my mind.
I should tell you about them sometime. |
