It's depressing,but I should complaine

OK I will.

With a nutritionist saying, don't eat anything good. But eat a lot more even if you have to liquid-fy it to an Elmer's glue consistency. And put 1/4th teaspoon of salt in a tiny personal shaker per day for "table salt". Protein, protein, portein.

Four hours in a plastic recliner with your blood drain in and out while the machine goes whirr, buzz, clunk, bump, click, click, BEEP, BEEP, BEEP,BEEP, and a blood pressure cuff, wheezing, pinching and deflating.

An operation to insert a fistula that was not perfect but at the time had the left arm totally "blocked". No feeling, no control below the shoulder, Total zombie.

The arm stayed red swollen itchy and slightly painful.

After seven weeks one of the clinic Drs. (Hasami) said we better look at that. Come in Tuesday and we may do some pictures.

At eight Tedora filled out thirty mins of forms. Hasami and two of his minions did three mins of pointing things out to each other at eight thirty.

They said prep him. Out of my shirt into a gown and a hair net. Down the hall into the O R. Up on the table. Alcohol rub on the arm. Thick rubber glove over the fist. Hot blanket on me. ( It was cold in there.) Bunch of wraps around shoulder. Lean-to tent of blue plastic from left side to the I V pole and I could see nothing except the nurses face when she would peek in to ask if I had any chest pain. (didnt)

Couple of needle pricks. Much grabbing, pinching, squeezing, grunting, clipped single word directions to each other.

OK sit up, sit down in wheel chair, put shirt back on, out to the lobby with Cathy to be told what happened.

I have an angioplasty up around the collar bone area and the EKG showed an irregularity in the heart beat that should be taken to a cardiologist for possible pace maker. ( After all the EKG s in the last four months the first one I've failed.)

They said call your regular Dr. for a reference. Atallah called back and said see me first. So thurs I'll go from Dombrowski to Atallah.

And its the sixth day of a stinking cold. ( Nothing has any taste. Including this entry. )

Also, you probably have several people praying daily for your soul.

Instead of simply being "nonreligious," atheists strongly believe in the lack of existence of a higher being, or God.

atheism

100%

Paganism

50%

agnosticism

46%

Judaism

42%

Islam

33%

Buddhism

33%

Satanism

33%

Christianity

25%

Hinduism

8%

</td>

Which religion is the right one for you?

WHAT A BEAUTIFUL DAY

After seven years of mixed weather every one was remarking on the wonderful combination of sun, breeze, and temperature. Other than the hot dog stand running out of hot dogs it was perfect, and they were able to get more hot dogs.

The old shed that will be the Garden Tool Shed, thanks to a Boy Scout project, has been moved to its new cement foundation and it awaits rehabilitation.

With the shed moved the "Lets paint a farm scene" activity center had a place to display their results.

There was also a place for the public to work a mural panel like the ones planed for the celebration of the founding of Saline taking place later this summer.

The Fiddlers ReStrung entertained with their type of folk music. It is a style that had the percussionist going from washboard to bongos to train whistles.

It's foot tapping music and for several numbers, members of the band and even the sound tech got out front and "clog" danced on a sheet of plywood.

The son of one of the "House ladies" as a Junior High community service project is helping in the garden. He was planting while the visitors walked by. It looked like 1930 to me.

But he was having a problem I remember from my youth. When you are putting plants in it's hard to keep a straight row. The eight foot rod was not helping.

So, Cathy got out this pretty string and stretched it across the garden.

It didn't help much, but the plants are in.

And the string is rewound.

( Notice the tall black object. It's two Bose amps that were state of the art and comfortable to listen to even within four feet.)

After the fiddlers left we were treated to The Generations Duo. I do not remember her name but he was introduced as the drummer with the Johnny Knorr Band. When I looked it up, on line, the band is called a big band that goes back to the end of that era and the drummer is listed as "the legendary Bob Johnson".

She played well, called the tunes and had a very nice voice.

He was great on the drums and played the vibraphone beautifully.

A member of the audience who had to dance.

It was a beautiful day for opening the farms eighth season.

You have a greatness about you and stand out brilliantly. Finally, you see and understand all that is happening within your sphere. When you see this card, know that you will be successful at all you undertake.
LAURA HAVILAND

She is the most unforgettable person I've never met. The first thing I noticed was sort of art related. There in the middle of Adrian Michigan was this totally unglamorous statue of a real woman I'd never heard of. She was seated stiffly in a stone chair wearing what seems to be her winter coat and hat, holding a Bible. It was winter when I first saw her, but as the seasons changed I realized there are other fully clothed statues but none I could remember in cold weather gear and none that were female.

Eventually a librarian was able to answer my questions about her. She was a local "activist" before that became the term for it. She has several web sites with the remarkable details of her biography.

But my favorite story is one the librarian told me about one of her techniques for picking up fugitive slaves from an underground railway station in Ohio. She would drive her buggy by herself to the south and then, when she picked up the fugitive, she would hide him in plain sight, putting him on the drivers seat. She would sit in the back passenger seat, shouting orders to him as though he was her driver.

A few years ago the Detroit ABC TV station called attention to the fact that there are far fewer statues of real women than real men. Most female statues are either about some fictional character or they represent an abstraction like justice or liberty. I'm not sure how to count the statue of Mary Richards, because we all know that's really Mary Tyler Moore.

As I listened to the press conference I had this strange vision...................

GEORGE W BUSH : THE MUSICAL A LAUGHABLE TRAGEDY, IN SEVERAL OUTRAGEOUS ACTS

(To the tune of The Great Pretender. And picture Scott M, doing all the Motown backup moves while the press corps as the chorus does the OOO, ooo, OOO, ooo's)

Oh yes, he's the great decider,
Deciding what every one must do.
His will is such, he decides too much,
He's lonely but deciding's what he must do.

Oh yes he's the great decider,
Aloof from the job that he's won
He plays the game but ignores the blame,
And that smirk says that he's having fun

Too real the feeling he's made no mistakes
Too real he feels he needs some breaks.

Oh Yes he's the great decider,
Just scowling and pouting like a mime
He'll appear to know, but it's all for show,
And its only a matter of time,
Deciding the decider has to go.

As he dances off, George is saying "Dick said I should say that, about me being the decider.

Wish I'd Done That

One painting has always fascinated me. The artist was a twin. Both were well known and that was part of the reason why, in 1945, when MGM decided to make Oscar Wilde"s novel, Picture of Dorian Gray. they asked Melvin Albright to paint the "before" portrait of the actor,Hurd Hatfield and Ivan to do the "after" concept. They didn't use the "before" by his brother, but they did use Ivan's showing several stages and this final portrait,

When another of Ivan"s paintings That Which I Should Have Done I Did Not Do some times known as Door, was used as a cover on a popular magazine it caught my attention as well as my eye. The pictures of how he had to alter his studio to fit the dimentions of the painting were odd. To keep the work area at eye level he cut a hole in his floor and in the roof to allow him to move the more than life size canvas up and down on his easel.

It became my favorite painting when Barb and I were looking at it "live" in the art museum in Chicago and I found myself glancing at the floor beneath the painting to see if there were any paint chips or debris from the wreath.

His other works were often shown and they usually tried to make a point like the one about being made in God's image.

But as a person who dislikes picking favorites in any area, Door is the major exception, not only for the way it looks, but for the heavy handed irony of the title.

Abstrat Distractions:

Last week at a candle party Sara, Nancy and their friends used the gathering as a chance to craft over one hundred place card/favor boxes. When they were assembled and placed in a container Nancy photografted them and later shared that and other photos.

It was a strangely dynamic visual with a sense of the energy that went into making each box and even the way they were brought together in the container. Futurism came to mind and Du Champ's "Nude Descending A Staircase" in particular seemed to be . made of similar visual bits.

That made me wonder what might result if Nancy's picture of Sara's boxes were used as the source for the "edit" functions available at the Kodak EasyShare site. I have enjoyed using the "cartoon" function to make pseudo sketches of family members, like this "drawing" of my brother Maxson and Sam his dog.

The same function made the bunch of boxes look even more like Duchamp's painting ( once described by a conservative critic as a cyclone in a shingle factory.).

There is a "coloring book" option that give the picture a line sketch effect that made the boxes look more like an architectural drawing.

Another choice is called "fish eye" because it resembles the rounded lens that brings more of the edges into the picture. In the Kodak site they make this effect by magnifying the middle of the picture more than the edges and you end up with the boxes looking like something caught in a bottle.

Two other controls have to do with the color or the lack of color. The first takes out the hues but leaves the shades of gray and the picture looks like a black and white photo. It begins to look like a solid structure.

Instead of black and white you can click on "sepia" and be reminded of the photos from a century ago.

Another choice is to repeat one function several times. This often turns out badly but a few are at least interesting. Repeated "cartoon" clicks will pile on so many lines that the picture looks like a darkly grouted mosaic.

As you work with the photo you begin to see parts that are interesting and with a function called "cropping" you can create details that are clever designs on their own.

And once in a while there is a miracle.

As you can see , there is Mary and Joseph the crib with just a hint of the babes head and one of the wise men. kneeling. holding a gift, or is it a guitar. or an angel with a harp.

OK What then?

Its clear with a photo that is already as close as reality can come to an abstract design you can have almost endless visual fun with it.

Dance: First

Dancers at the Coconut Radio show

The other night my daughter amused us with her comments on line dance at a country/western venue. Oh, sure, its an easy target for a giggle or two, but it brought my attention to Dance as a topic for this modern day version of SHOW AND TELL, DEAR DIARY, and the BACK FENCE.

My older daughter and I have been fascinated along with this nations fascination over the television show Dance With The Stars. What a clever concept it was. No manifacture unreal "reality" with non entities on some unlikely or primitive place. These were public people with some degree of celebrity, matched with almost unknown but life time highly professional dancers, in a familiar public location. Even the recent factor of viewer voting, with the popularity of the person working against a purely skill oriented choice added an unpredictable feature that increased the suspense each week.

The presentation was perfect for the contest concept and it made me think of the numbers from the musicals of the thirties and forties or the variety shows and occasional dance specials on television in the fifties and sixties.

And to top off this focus on movement to music theme St Patrick's Day gave all the Celtic Dance troops their once a year chance to appear on most of the talk shows and all of the news casts. At this point the visual images start over lapping.
Cute little Irish girls, arms held to their sides while their feet fling themselfs in every direction, Men and women in cowboy hats and boots, clapping hands, bobbing and weaving while doing synchronized stomping. A line of mature men resting their arms on the shoulders next to them as they all wind their way through the room to mandolin like music.

That began a flood of memories dancing through my mind.

I should tell you about them sometime.

Peggy's Cove

It sounds a little bit country.

And its about an unrealized desire?
Now that's country.

Add a twangy guitar and a staccato fiddle and that's Mom's "down home" Nova Scotia music.

I never knew as a kid why we always listen to The Grand Old Opry, The Barn Dance and The Louisiana Hay Ride. Or why Mom would hum along with the cleaning lady as she sang the latest Roy Acuff hit.

(I have to pause here to tell you the cleaning lady's name was Vera Valley, realy I'm not making that up. She had a pretty good country sound and if she'd been a coal miner's daughter--who knows?).

That however was not the limits of the music we listened to. I think we heard every program that featured any kind of music.

There was Wayne King The Waltz King, who probably inspired L. Welk. The Hit Parade was Maxson, my brother's favorite, He made a list each week of the order of each song. He also played the trumpet and with friends, he would practice band marches, concert tunes and popular songs. And on his own he tried every riff Harry James was known for.

My Mother was just good enough on the piano to teach herself her favorite hymns so we could all sing them on the right seasonal occasions. And my father played the bass drum in the city band when he wasn't being the Parade Sargent in charge of the whole parade.

We usually listened to the classical hour on Sunday afternoon, sometimes the Opera and even the short lived series like "Phil Spitalny and his all girl orchestra, featuring Evelyn and her magic violin." (Even when Benny Goodman was breaking the race barrier no one hired women players, just "the girl singers".)

On top of all that I managed to go to every movie musical that came to the Midstate Theater and many of the comedies and dramas with the newly invented idea of a movie sound track.

I guess thats why I have no taste in music. I just like it all.*

David's new song brought all of this to mind so I am anxious to hear it and play it when the new record comes out.

* There are a few exceptions but they are not related to the music involved.

While I Have Your Attention

Just to let you know I am impressed, and somewhat intimidated.

That my four kids have each been their own person is a given. But in this culture of the journal to see such levels of articulate expressions from all of them makes me very aware "things change".
When I was their age and I was teaching my English classes the idea of keeping a journal I attempted to do what I told the class to do. For six weeks I wrote something everyday. It took real dedication but it was not long enough to become a habit. It did, however, make me aware of what it takes to be a "natural" at it.
To make my point, I always knew my children had their own views but now its clear they do share one characteristic. They write well and when they need to they can, like me, expand on it.

Sentimental Me

In the spring of 1950, when I decided I was not ruthless enough to become a good Methodist minister, I attempted finding a template to help me make my life choices.
Still looking.
Current events in the lives of my family brought this to mind.
One daughter is trying to shovel her way through the deep drifts of tradition to discover what it is about marriage that she would like to hold on to.
Another is publicly slogging her way through the muck of human behavior trying to find at least a rock to stand on.
And yet another is seeking haven as her world changes.
Their brother meanwhile is progressing from position to position professionally. And at the same time exploring facet after facet of the preforming arts.
I try to keep up with all this without getting in the way. And I sit wondering why the insurance statistics failed and left me here instead of Barb,to ponder all this.
David Mamet and Shel Silversteins' old Italian shoeshine guy (Don Ameche) said it in the title line.
"Things change."

Rank Stupidity:

Its probably a stupid concept but if there were a scale of say 0 to 100 (1to10 won't work because there is so much of it!) to rank what is most stupid, with 0 being as smart as a sack of rocks and 100 being one who always knows better, could we deal with the staggering dumbness of the current news?

Notice how the more tragic the news the more rank the stupidity.

Pat Robertson and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, President of Iran both assure us that it was God/Allah who caused Sharon's stroke. Iran's President said it was because Allah was showing what He thinks of all Jews and will soon do to that whole nation. That makes you wonder why he didn't blame the Holocaust on Allah instead of claiming it was a vast hoax and it never happened. But that is another level of stupid. Pat's idea was Sharon gave too much of the holy land back to Palestine. I guess he thinks Jews are more Christian than the generic Arabs are. Well He started out jewish.

Speaking of Jesus an Italian Atheist has gone to court to prove that his local priest is a fraud because Jesus never was. Now what choice will that judge have?
And to pile stupid on stupid the writers for the Good Morning America show had one of the hosts say "Not since The Miracle on 34th Street has there been such a question about a persons existence." Think about it.

That even had no real tragedy but the "They are alive." snafu in Virginia left everyone wondering how it lasted three minutes, let alone three hours.

There seems to be no end. How did Abramoff think he could pull off that kind of stupid vote buying? Did he have role models that never got caught? An now will he really name more than twenty others? Stay tuned.

And there have been hints that G.W.'s name might come up on that list.

It's going to take too long to even mention where to rank all that George and the Stupid Gang has done. I can not remember a president that might place lower on this scale. Even Nixon before Watergate was able to maintain a Forrest Gump like level of having his dumb things have a smart enough end result.

As hard as it is to rank his presidency, how much more difficult to decide at what level to place all those who voted for him the second time. They might displace that sack of rocks.

They're all crazy, except you and me, and sometimes I wonder about.......................

The Musical

This was a begun as a reply to my son's comments on the movie we went to after Christmas. It would have been a quick "me too" sort of comment but time was short and it seemed easier to come back to it later. It soon became obvious that my reaction had grown to a series of observations too numerous and long to use as a "Quick comment". Now the choice is to just enjoy thinking about it or to make the effort to share those ideas here.

The Producers is a movie about making bad musicals and it has been at the top of my list of all time funniest movies. There was only one bit that was not perfect. No one could ever do it better.

Mel Brooks thought so too. But his wife and friends didn't agree and they were right. They thought Mel could do it better by making it a musical about making bad musicals.

At first I thought this was a throw back to the musicals of the 20s,30s and 40s, but that was because he makes use of the pattern not the content. In the movie you have conflict-funny behavior/joke-resolution. In the musical its the similar traditional device of conflict-strange behavior/song-resolution.Besides that the music and the staging has a generic broadway sound and look.

Almost everything else is not traditional. There is no boy/girl plot or subplot, not even in the musicale within the musical. As in Man of La Mancha the plot is about a quest not a sexual conquest.
But the heroes are not nobel, not even nice, just barely sympathetic. They are two greedy guys willing to do major white collar crime to achieve the perks of fame and fortune.

There is no villain just an uncaring system they blame for holding them back. And they do not confront the system they just try to exploit a gap in its accountability.

In the old musicals they would have to "pay" for the crime and either reform, beg forgiveness or be punished or all three. But other than being caught by a twist of fate and a quirk of "show biz" they go on to succeed the second time and (back to a traditional ending) walk off into the sunset (substitute bright lights) together.

Wholesome sex, the major theme of early musicals was never mentioned. One lead used sex to extort money gifts from elderly, lonely women, both men lusted after the beautiful girl actresses, one aggressively one shyly, some of the actors and the director were outlandishly gay. and the only major female character flaunted her sexuality in an openly offhanded manner. There were tiny hints of such behavior in several musicals but only to be giggled at with a wink and a nudge.

Mel Brooks once said the only way to destroy Hitler now is by showing how ridiculous and stupid he was. It's a lesson we never seem to learn. We keep coming up with these leaders who are so stupid you can not understand how people can continue to believe them.

Like the author of Cyrano De Bergerac, Brooks has exaggerated a declining art form into a near masterpiece.

Thank you David, it was a wonderful New Year's gift.
